Why is my electric bill so high?

Option 1.jpg

Buckle up, Floridians! You might have noticed your electric bills are a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Overall, bills are up 18-65% across the state's largest utilities since 2020. Floridians saw 10-20% increases in their bills in 2023 alone. What do these rate hikes mean for Sunshine State households? How can we take charge and brighten our energy future?

Natural Gas Prices are Volatile

The rising and volatile cost of natural gas has been credited by the utilities themselves as a major contributing factor to electric rate increases in Florida. Today, the vast majority of our electricity comes from gas. Its volatile cost is detrimental to Florida's families and businesses, making electric bills less predictable. Thankfully, Florida’s abundant sunshine gives us an opportunity to lead on solar power. As our population grows and temperatures increase, it will also be vital to conserve as much power as possible. Yet today, Florida’s energy efficiency ranking is currently one of the lowest in the nation despite its huge energy savings potential.

What's next?

Together, we can rally our leaders to create an energy security plan. Imagine an energy future where Florida calls the shots. It's time that Florida takes advantage of local solar production and no longer relies on importing over $5 billion worth of natural gas from out of state annually. By advocating for a task force to address this, we can pave the way towards a more stable and sustainable energy landscape for all Floridian families.
